Owen Sound Police have arrested a 23-year-old Owen Sound woman with several charges, including Fraud and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.

The woman has been charged following an investigation by the Owen Sound Police and the Criminal Investigation Branch, after the unidentified suspect apparently forged several cheques from someone else’s defunct bank account.

The investigation made it’s biggest progress when the woman asked an unidentified victim, another woman from Owen Sound and a former high school friend, to cash some cheques for her so she could buy things for her child. The accused issued a total of 5 cheques to the victim totalling over $1,500. Police investigators believe that the victim was unaware that the cheques were forged until she was contacted by her bank regarding the invalid cheques, leaving her on the hook for their value. The victim subsequently notified police.

The accused was arrested on March 4th and charged with seven counts each of Uttering a Forged Document and Fraud Under $5,000, plus one count of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.  She was released on a Promise to Appear and an Officer-in-Charge Undertaking with certain conditions.  She is to attend Court in Owen Sound on the 25th of March, 2010 to face her charges.
