Doors Open an Opportunity to Learn Local History

City of Owen Sound      Submission
5/31/2010

From a maternity hospital to a cemetery, Doors Open Owen Sound gives you a wide ranging look into the heritage of our community. June 5 and 6, from 10 am to 4 pm, this is a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy 19 sites of cultural, historical, environmental and architectural significance in and around the City – all free of charge.

As part of the larger Doors Open Ontario, Owen Sound has participated in this successful annual event since 2003. Last year over 7,000 site visits were recorded, with visitors from throughout Grey and Bruce Counties, Ontario, and even internationally. Out of 55 participating communities, Owen Sound ranks 8th, with 15 site visits per 100 residents. This year we are one of 11 communities chosen to participate in a Socioeconomic Impact Study – it will reveal important information about the program such as average visitor expenditures, travel distances, and overall community impacts.

Great prizes are waiting to be won by those who participate in the Impact Study survey and the local Passport Contest.

Many of the sites this year feature special events such as art exhibitions, documentary screenings, musical performances, backstage tours, and guided tours, as well as the annual Veteran’s Commemoration Day events at the Billy Bishop Home & Museum. Tuesday’s edition of The Sun Times and the flyer packages include an insert listing all the sites and events plus a map to plan your day; or go
online to www.owensound.ca for all the details.
